Caroline White

Director, Association Solutions Operations, McLean Office

1. What has your journey through MCI USA looked like?

I started at MCI USA five years ago as a client coordinator for two associations in an external facing role. I learned a lot about marketing and membership management, however when I saw an opening on the finance team, I recognized an opportunity to learn new skills and continue to grow professionally. From the finance team, I moved into an operations role and have been oscillating between the two ever since. For the past two years I’ve been the director of Association Solutions Operations, working with a small team as a liaison between the operations and finance team and client teams.

2.  You’ve also gotten the chance to live abroad while still working here. Where have you lived?

I have actually lived in two countries outside of the US since starting at MCI! Even before I started in my coordinator role, I knew I wanted to get my masters in nonprofit management, and I wanted to keep growing personally and professionally. I started work on my masters in 2017, and during the fall of 2018 I moved to Berlin for a semester, where I took classes. I was really lucky to be able to move to a part-time role on the finance team working remotely.

In the spring of 2020, I worked remotely again when I moved to Oxford (right outside of London) to be with my now-husband who was getting his masters there. I continued to work for MCI full time while we were living in Oxford. Little did I know, it would only be a few months before all of the company was remote!

3.  If you moved abroad again, where would you like to live?

If I were moving for a short time, like a year or so, I’d want to move back to Berlin. It was such a fun adventure! But if I were moving for multiple years, I’d rather live in London, because there’s no language barrier, so it’s a lot easier to adjust.

4.  Congrats on your recent wedding! How did COVID change your plans?

We originally planned for a big church wedding and then a formal reception, but because of coronavirus, we ended up doing a small ceremony in my parent’s backyard with only 13 people in attendance in September. Even though it wasn’t what we planned, it was still amazing and I’m so happy to be married. We’re still holding out hope that we can have a larger wedding this summer to celebrate with everyone who couldn’t be at our ceremony last year!

5. What was your New Year’s resolution for 2021?

Usually I don’t make them, but this year I made a resolution to buy more fresh flowers and write more notes. I feel like I’ve done a lot of video calls over the past year, but I think there is still magic in the written word and I just love having fresh flowers around.
