Members of the Baltimore team spent a recent Friday afternoon at the Baltimore Hunger Project volunteering for the Bridging the Weekend Hunger Gap project. Eleven talents – and one teenager, Carrie Hartin’s hard-working daughter Royce – spent a few hours moving boxes, loading and unloading trucks, moving boxes down a flight of stairs, bagging large amounts of bread, and putting together 600 bags of food for food-insecure children to have something to eat over the weekend.
Lynne Kahn, the founder of Baltimore Hunger Project, spoke to our Baltimore talents about what their help meant to her and her team. Lynne explained that the Baltimore Hunger Project really couldn’t do what they do without help from volunteers. She started this project in 2014 feeding about 30 kids and in the last 7 years, and that has ballooned to 600 hundred children.
Aisha France, Marketing Coordinator, SS&S, commented “The most striking thing I personally learned was the reason we were including plastic utensils in the food bags we were putting together. Lynne learned that some kids didn’t have spoons or forks at home to eat the food that BHP was providing, so now she includes utensils as well. I know that is hard for most of us to imagine, but that is the reality for some households. I think we should all feel good about what we took part in and use it as motivation to do more in the future. I think all of us who attended would attest to it being a great day helping a great local organization that is doing impactful work (and it was nice to see faces we haven’t seen in a year). It’s a massive effort and I hope the MCI USA Baltimore team can support the Baltimore Hunger Project in this way again.”
The MCI USA Baltimore Community Outreach Committee thanks all who made food/monetary donations. Shout out to Meredith, Sandra, Carrie, Sandra, Alli, Colby, Josh, Jake, Taylor, Carli, and Royce for taking the time out of their day to show the Power of Action! Special shoutout to Jake who collected food from family, friends, and neighbors. Jake, you’re a rockstar!
