IT support associate Cornell Thompson has been with MCI USA for over a year, helping talents across the company navigate their tech challenges and implement solutions to be more efficient. Here, the Baltimore resident dives into his passion for IT and what he likes best about working at MCI USA.
- Why did you choose to go into the IT field?
I majored in IT at Towson University in Maryland and saw the impact I was making in my small community by working at the help desk. I helped students with technology and made their lives a little easier and knew that’s what I wanted to do in the future. I love helping people achieve their goals through technology. - What’s the most rewarding part about working at MCI USA?
The relationships I’ve built, helping others and working with the people — it’s very friendly here. [Everyone] is so willing to give you assistance with whatever you need. - What are some common tech solutions you can offer as an IT associate?
When in doubt, turn it off and turn it back on. Most problems can be solved with a reset of your computer. Another issue we see a lot is cameras not working, so if you run into that problem, make sure you check your camera toggle at the top of your screen. We’re always happy to help whenever you have a problem! - Did you take any summer trips this year?
I took a few extra days off around the Juneteenth holiday to go to the Dominican Republic. I loved the beaches and the atmosphere. It was so much fun! Even the heat there is different — the sun hits you, and it feels good, instead of being super humid. I had a great trip, but I’m happy to be back to work! - What’s one place in Baltimore you would recommend people visit?
There’s a restaurant called Birria Love that’s a great place. Go there, get yourself some tacos, and I promise you’ll have a great time. They have some unique stuff there, so if you go in with an open mind, you might change your palate.
