MCI Baltimore spent a warm morning in early July visiting the local fire station. They took lunch and notes of support to the firefighters, toured the station, gained a lot of knowledge and new appreciation for what they do, and washed their fire truck! This particular fire station responds to all of the emergency calls and fire drills for the SS&S team’s office building. In fact, this is the fire station that sent responders to the rescue at the Baltimore office when a small fire started in one of the interior offices. The SS&S talents were happy to spend some time showing their appreciation to these men and women who are always there when we need them.

Here are a few interesting facts from the fire station:

  • They respond to a lot more than just fires! In fact, most of their calls are not for fires. Car accidents, overdoses, and domestic disturbances are all within their line of work.
  • Those car registration fees we pay when we buy a new car pay for their training.
  • Cost of a fire truck: $650,000
  • The second leading cause of death for firefighters is being hit by distracted or impaired drivers. Let’s all remember to move over for emergency vehicles.
  • Fire extinguishers do expire (even if you don’t see an expiration date). If it’s been 10-15 years since you purchased yours, you should probably replace it. Donating old extinguishers to your local fire station is also a great idea. They use them for training.
